REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE
LIBERTE EGALITE FRATERNITE
To the population of the Vercors
As from 3 July 1944, the French Republic is officially restored on the Vercors.
On this date decrees passed by Vichy are abolished, all its laws cease to have effect and the laws of the Republic shall again be in force from this day onwards. The Committee for National Liberation on the Vercors has been formally invested with its functions and with wide powers by the Commissioner for the Republic.
Charged with the implementation of these decisions, the Committee seeks to carry out its administrative functions in a manner consistent with the principles of justice, but also of firmness, relying on the dedicated assistance and the common sense of the people of the Vercors who, during the entire period of clandestine resistance, have shown levels of courage and loyalty to France which are beyond all praise.
Our region is under siege. The Committee for National Liberation therefore asks the population to be prepared to do all that is possible and more, as we ourselves shall do, to place every available means at the disposal of the military command who have the daunting task of protecting us against a barbaric enemy.
People of the Vercors, it is our privilege to be the site of our great Republic’s rebirth. You should be proud of this fact. We are certain that you will do all in your power to defend it. We intend that the 14th of July will be for the Vercors a moment when we shall be able to celebrate, more than ever before, our faith in the Republic and our loyalty to our great country.
Long live the French Republic!
Long live France!
Long live General de Gaulle!
